Malignant mixed Mullerian tumor

Overview

A rare malignant cancer that develops in the uterus, ovary or fallopian tubes. The tumor contains epithelial and stromal cells. The cancer may be slow-growing or aggressive and may metastasize.

Symptoms

* Abnormal vaginal bleeding * Enlarged uterus * Lower abdominal pain * Asymptomatic in early stages * Post-menopausal bleeding

Prognosis

- If extension to serosa of uterus or beyond at surgery, prognosis is hopeless - Only chance of cure is if tumor is restricted to inner half of myometrium at surgery: * >50% of these patients harbor occult metastatic disease - Staging is most important predictor of prognosis

Treatment

- Abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy: * treatment of choice * usually followed by adjuvant therapy - Radiation therapy and chemotherapy: * response generally poor * some encouraging reports
