Causes

might be due to low progesterone levels

might be caused due to an allergy to males own semen that contributes to the symptoms of this illness

One researcher suggests that the symptoms may be produced by an autoimmune reaction against any of various hormones or other substances secreted during and after sex.

Treatment

POIS patients are beginning to be treated using hyposensitation techniques for semen allergies.

Some patients respond to doses of norethisterone half and hour before, and in the minutes just after orgasm.

Many affected individuals will typically avoid sexual activity, especially orgasm, or schedule sexual intercourse for times when they can rest and recover afterwards.
