Euromit 2014 – International Meeting on Mitochondrial Pathology

Euromit 2014

Euromit 2014 will be the 9th in a series of international conferences dedicated to understanding how mitochondria are involved in disease. Since the late 1980s, when the first disease-causing lesions in mitochondrial DNA were described, the field of mitochondrial pathology has grown to become one of the most important areas of molecular medicine. The conference will bring together leaders of the field as well as many young talents. In total, we expect some 700 molecular scientists, clinicians and representatives of the healthcare industry to attend.

Mitochondrial diseases can afflict people at any age, affecting virtually any organ in the body, and showing any pattern of inheritance. They range from relatively rare but devastating illnesses in newborn babies, to childhood-, juvenile- or adult-onset progressive disorders. They include muscle weakness, diabetes, epilepsy, as well as degenerative disorders of the heart and brain, including Parkinson’s disease.

Euromit 2014 will bring together leading scientists, clinicians and representatives of the healthcare industry, to discuss the latest scientific advances in the field, including promising new strategies for treating patients, based on this growing knowledge. Many speaker slots will be reserved for contributions to be selected from the submitted abstracts, representing late-breaking stories.

For the first time, Euromit 2014 in Finland will be held alongside a parallel meeting for mitochondrial disease patients, their carers and support organizations from many countries. A pre-symposium, Young Mitoscientists’ Forum, will be organized for PhD students and junior postdocs to present their work to their peers, via selected talks and an extended poster session.

Euromit 2014 will be held in Finland’s premier conference venue, Tampere Hall, in the midsummer season of the white nights. The city of Tampere, which stands at the crossroads of lakes, cultures and industries old and new, is proud to host the many hundreds of international visitors who will convene for this important event in the scientific calendar.

Alongside researchers and students, Euromit warmly welcomes all corporate partners from Finland and beyond. Our objective is to make Euromit 2014 a conference to remember for both conference attendees and the company representatives.

Euromit 2014 emcompasses a lively social programme. The social events will encompass fire, water, tango and traditional Finnish dish, blood sausage.
