A FAMILY is fundraising to fly their son's "best friend" from the US — in the hope of aiding his recovery from lifesaving surgery.

Julian Forester, 17, suffered from a rare terminal lung disorder called idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension.

He recently underwent a double lung transplant and has a long road to recovery.

The 17-year-old's grandparents, Cathie and Tom Davis, from Bethania, have started an online fundraiser to unite Julian with his 16-year-old friend, Dawn Binkley, from Pennsylvania.

Since the pair met 18 months ago online, Julian's father, Will Forester said they were "inseparable".

"They talk for hours and hours on Skype," he said.

"It's an incredible bond. It's the stuff they write movies about. That's why we've got to get her here."

Mr Forester said Julian and Dawn had dreamt of meeting, but his son's health had been a barrier.

He said Dawn had been "vital" to getting his son through one of the toughest fights of his life.

The family needed $8000 to fly Dawn and her mother to Brisbane. So far $1800 had been raised.

If the family does not reach its target, the money will go to the Prince Charles Hospital Foundation.

To donate, visit the GoFundMe website and to follow Julian's story, go to the Saving Jules Facebook page.
