FireRock Country Club will host a charity golf tournament and auction Sept. 23 to raise funds for Kid's Care Ministry at St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church, Scottsdale.

The goal is to collect funds for St. Andrew's Clinic in Nogales, AZ. The non-profit, non-denominational clinic cares for children in two areas: cleft palate/cleft lip and augmentative/alternative communication.

Each year, Kid's Care Ministry members, led by Mark Close and Deacon Grant Gilfeather, visit the clinic to see the progress of patients and the specialized medical care that they can't receive or afford in their native country.

As part of a three-way partnership with Children's Surgery International of Minnesota and Hospital CIMA in Hermosillo, St. Andrew's Children's Clinic provides surgeries to 55-60 children and follows up with additional surgeries that the children may need as they develop.

After the surgeries, St. Andrew's Children's Clinic gives speech therapy and other needed orthodontic repairs.

One of the cleft palate patients is Liahm Moroyoque who was born with a double cleft lip and cleft palate.

Babies with cleft palate/cleft lip cannot suck like normal babies. The clinic provides the mothers with special bottles and nipples, formula and nutritional supplements.

The children in the augmentative/alternative communication department have different conditions that make speech difficult or impossible. Some have developmental apraxia of speech while others have been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome or Hunter's syndrome.

Another aspect of the program purchases software programs for iPads to let the children answer questions and hear their voices.

If interested in participating in the tournament or learning more about Kid-s Care Ministries, contact Grant Gilfeather at 480-451-0860.
