A Kirkby couple are continuing their drive to raise £40,000 for an operation that could give their young son the gift of sight.

Jay McKnight and Kirsty Hudson's three-year-old son Bradley McKnight suffers from a rare disorder called septo optic dysplasia and has been completely blind since he was a baby.

The couple, of Welbeck Street, are pinning their hopes on pioneering surgery available in China which uses stem cell technology and could give him a chance to see — and have so far raised around £18,000 through various community events.

Upcoming events include:

  • A fancy dress disco at Kirkby's Bentinck Miners' Welfare on Friday, from 7.30-11.30pm. Tickets cost £2, £1.50 for children. Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.
  • A football tournament at Bentinck Miners' Welfare on Saturday. Teams must include seven players and entry is £5 per person. Teams should arrive at 10.30am for an 11am kick-off and the winner will be presented with the Bradley McKnight Trophy (donated by Showstoppers in Kirkby).
  • There will also be a tombola, raffle ––with one prize being a car donated by Kirkby Motor Services –– children's rides and a car boot sale. For details contact Tom on 07531 789467.
  • A 70s and 80s night at Kirkby's Festival Hall on 19th December, with tickets costing £6.

Said Kirsty: "We would like to thank everyone who have helped bake cakes and to those who helped organised the recent fun day at Huthwaite Leisure Centre — we raised £1,017 towards Bradley's fund.

"We have now got all the money from a sponsored bike ride and that made around £600 and Jay and I did a bungee jump, which raised around £200.

"We would also like to thank the Blidworth Bridge Club, which has raised £245, and to Ashfield Friends of the Blind — which is still helping us push forward and without them we would not have half the money we have now."
