Bonnie was diagnosed with the rare and incurable neurodegenerative disease Niemann-Pick Type C five months ago.

THE proud parents of a tot battling childhood Alzheimer's told of their joy at seeing her celebrate her first birthday.

Little Bonnie Strachan enjoyed the landmark date with proud parents Kayla Strachan and Jack McMillan, and three-year-old twin brothers Dylan and Lucas.

Kayla, 20, from Newarthill, Lanarkshire, said: "No matter what life throws at her she is a fighter.

"I want to say a huge thanks to everyone who came to make Bonnie's day that bit more special."

Bonnie was diagnosed with the rare and incurable neurodegenerative disease Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) five months ago which causes symptoms similar to those of Alzheimer's, including slurred speech and memory loss.

Although she has been suffering from pneumonia, Bonnie – the only baby in Scotland with the disease – fought the odds to get out of hospital and attend her party at home and Carfin Parish Church.

Kayla said: "Turning one after the year that she has had and after multiple hospital stays and a devastating diagnosis was another milestone defeated by Bonnie."
The couple thanked everyone who rallied round to make it a day to remember.
