Doctor Tang Chi Thuong, the hospital director, said the 1.2-meter, 102-kilogram Chau Van Sang could not walk by himself and had to be carried by three people.

Thuong said even after many tests the hospital had been unable to find out the cause of the child`s obesity and had to consult with specialists from the UK, US, and Netherlands to find out about Prader-Willi syndrome.

It is a rare genetic disorder in which seven genes (or some subset thereof) in chromosome 15 are missing or unexpressed.

After two weeks of treatment the child`s health has improved and he can walk a little bit.

The HCMC Committee for Population, Family and Children has gifted Sang a special wheelchair.

Thuong said while trying to reduce the boy`s weight by 10 percent doctors had to watch him very carefully since the disorder could cause diabetes, high blood pressure, and even stop him from breathing during sleep.

Sang`s was the fist known case of its kind in HCMC, he said.
