A New York personal injury attorney who concentrates in asbestos-exposure and mesothelioma claims praised the formation of an international consortium to focus research on the treatment of rare diseases, such as mesothelioma, ulcerative colitis, Alzheimer's disease, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer.

The International Rare Disease Research Consortium, a joint effort of the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the European Commission, said in a recent statement that it hopes to develop 200 new rare disease treatments by the year 2020 and develop diagnostics for all rare disorders.

“These so-called rare diseases and those who suffer from them certainly deserve this kind of concentrated effort,” said Joseph W. Belluck of New York City's Belluck & Fox law firm. “While the number of people with mesothelioma and some other diseases may be relatively few, the loss of life and living standards is very real to these patients and their families and loved ones.”

Rare or “orphan” diseases and disorders are those that affect fewer than 200,000 Americans at any given time. In addition to mesothelioma, a cancer diagnosed in 3,000 Americans each year, they include colon cancer, multiple sclerosis, AIDS and cerebral palsy. Between 85 and 90 percent of orphan diseases are serious or life-threatening, but they typically get scant attention from researchers and pharmaceutical companies.

“We look forward to the accomplishments of the International Rare Disease Research Consortium and hope that others will follow their lead,” Belluck said. “The only cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Had it received the scrutiny it deserved early on, steps could have been taken that would have saved thousands of lives and millions of dollars.”

Belluck is a nationally recognized New York mesothelioma attorney whose practice focuses on asbestos-exposure litigation, as well as consumer, environmental and product injury cases. Belluck has won several major cases involving injuries from asbestos.

“Research is about the future,” Belluck said. “For those who suffer now, legal assistance is often the answer for relieving at least the financial aspects of their pain.

“At Belluck & Fox, LLP, we help mesothelioma victims get payments for treatment as well as the compensation that is due when the infliction of this disease should have been prevented. This is one place where mesothelioma and its sufferers are not orphaned. We will not ignore their pain, nor those who are ultimately responsible for it.”
