A documentary about Cody Unser, who graduated from the University of Redlands in 2009, was one of the films chosen from more than 500 for the Orlando Film Festival Nov. 4-8.

"CODY: The First Step" is about how Unser's deal with having a rare disease, transverse myelitis, which left her paralyzed from the waist down at age 12.

The film was made to raise awareness and find a cure for transverse myelitis.

"The more the documentary gets out there for people to see, the greater the influence and awareness it creates," Unser said in a news release.

The documentary is up for several awards from the festival, the results of which will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 6.

This month, Unser returned to her alma mater for a special screening of her documentary for students and alums during the university's Homecoming weekend.

"CODY: The First Step" will air on KVCR channel 24. The documentary is airing on PBS stations across the country and will air in the Inland Empire today at 9 p.m. It will include a special interview with Unser filmed on the Redlands campus.
