CIPA (congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis) Update: The Little Girl Who Couldn’t Feel Pain

In 2005, Oprah met an extraordinary 5-year-old named Gabby. When Gabby was just a baby, there were signs she was not like other children. Her parents said she began compulsively chewing on her own hand, mutilating three fingers. Eventually, her parents decided to pull her teeth after she constantly chewed on her tongue. As Gabby got older, she constantly poked and scratched at her eyes, forcing doctors to remove one. Gabby, doctors found, has an extremely rare condition that does not allow her to feel physical pain. Today, she is a 14-year-old straight-A student getting ready for high school. Watch to see how Gabby, her parents and her elder sister, Katie, are doing today.
