What is Cushing's syndrome?
Glucocorticoids are a class of steroid hormones. Cushing's syndrome develops when the level of a glucocorticoid in your body is too high over a long period of time. Too much glucocorticoid can occur from an exogenous or endogenous source.

What are the symptoms of Cushing's syndrome?
Symptoms occur because you have too much cortisol in your body over a long period of time. Symptoms include the following. In most cases several of the symptoms listed below develop, although you are unlikely to have them all:

Obesity - with fat around the main body area (trunk) rather than the arms and legs. The arms and legs can become quite thin compared with the obese body.
Facial puffiness and the face often looking redder than usual.
Diabetes.
Facial hair in women.
High blood pressure.

What is the treatment of Cushing's syndrome?
The treatment options depend on what is causing the high level of cortisol.

Surgical treatment for a pituitary adenoma

Cushing's syndrome is an endocrine disorder caused by prolonged exposure of the body's tissues to high levels of cortisol (a hormone produced by the adrenal gland). It most commonly affects adults between age 20 and 50 years. Signs and symptoms of Cushing's syndrome include upper body obesity, fatigue, muscle weakness, high blood pressure, backache, high blood sugar, easy bruising and bluish-red stretch marks on the skin. Affected women may also experience irregular menstrual periods and increased growth of body and facial hair. This condition may be caused by a variety of factors including long-term use of corticosteroid medications, tumors in the pituitary gland or adrenal adenomas. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, but may include decreasing the dosage of corticosteroids or surgery to remove tumors.
